snow days and flakes and angels

Monday, all 3 of the birds had snow days...even Mamabird got the day off (well...I already had it off but...it was still nice to have it off)

I had planned on getting a lot more done but snuggling with all my babies and drinking hot chocolate can't be beat.  Is there anything better, really, than warm socks, hot chocolate and snuggles?

Bird loves the snow...this is the 1st year she has really enjoyed parts.  She had to go outside and try to catch some flakes on her tongue and she flopped down in the yard to make an angel.  She also assumed that the snow meant Santa was coming.  So...this is the 1st year she understands the idea of Santa.  Let's hope it turns out to be a good behavior motivator. :)

Beans are soaking tonight for some navy bean and ham soup this weekend...Bird was very chirpy and making loads of yum sounds so here's hoping she eats it.  Luckily it is easy to blend up in case she goes on a food strike (she has been sort of picky lately which makes me glad she has her tubie.)

The oldest Hardy Boy has joined basketball...in his senior year!  It will be an interesting experiment for sure.
He took his ACT and scored pretty well (which is very good since his GPA is very bad) and now we are just waiting to hear back from his schools.  His first choice is University of Minnesota Moorhead (Go Dragons.)  Fingers Crossed.

Youngest Hardy is, once again, on xbox lockdown.  Poor kid...but he needs to abide by the rules (being a mom is hard sometimes.)

Now, if only they would both get jobs already!!!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's getting chilly up in these parts.  Last night, Cori and I ventured down to Northrup auditorium with the Bird and caught the Hong Kong Ballet.

She was enchanted.

We also arrived early enough that the ballerinas were entering, to go to the director's dinner beforehand, and stopped and chatted with her.  Mesmerized would be how I described her.  Enchanted with all things ballet :)

Luckily, we got there that early because between finding a place to park and the Bird and I having to run all over campus to locate an ATM to pay for parking, Big Daddy Superstar barely made it to his seat in time.

The Bird spent the whole 2 hours staring at the stage and gasping in wonder.  A trip to see the nutcracker for Christmas may be in order. :)

We are also exploring the idea of ballet lessons for her.  Right now, she is in Just for Kix and she has lots of fun but we think the discipline and order of ballet may be something that helps her as well.

The Hardy Boys continue to plod through school.  The oldest has now decided to take up basketball...in his senior year...to stay in condition for track.

The youngest got a pencil stuck in his trumpet...really...I can't make this stuff up.

Halloween has come and gone.

This year I was so excited because the Bird wanted to  be a princess...a PRINCESS!!!  Princess Anna from Frozen.  I spent more money than I care to imagine to make sure she had a really cool outfit.  And then...she decided to be a pumpkin.

A real princess...I mean, one year she was a sandwich!!!

Oh well...it will be a nice play dress...a really nice, expensive, play dress.

Her pumpkin is still full of candy and she only wanted to eat candy for breakfast today...she managed real food for the other meals. :)

Today she had a doozy of a seizure...all in all, it lasted about 2 mins and her nose was drippy all day.  We had to neb her tonight.  Fingers crossed that she is better tomorrow.

The boys dressed up this year but no trick or treating.  They both were at friends' houses...empty nest syndrome already.

Bring on the next holiday!!!  This nest is ready!!! :)

Dentist

Today my baby bird went to the dentist for the first time.  I know she is 5 and I know she should have went earlier.

Here's the thing....
we live in the middle of nowhere.  Getting a dentist that takes new clients is a small miracle.  Finding a dentist that takes kiddos with special needs is nothing short of the heavens opening and God, Himself, smiling down on you.

So we found a special needs dentist that was taking new patients...it's like we won the lottery only this costs money instead of winning money.  Unfortunately, the wait was a bit long.  Like a year.

BUT

today the Bird went to the dentist.  She was not thrilled with the idea (which we have been talking about for over a month...marked on the calendar, counting down, helping her prep)  We bought every dentist book we could find and did some major prep work.  She was not impressed.  The conversation/book reading/video watching, usually ended with her covering her head and screaming.  I was not anticipating any sort of dentistry success and waiting for the email from Big Daddy telling me they had to sedate her.

BUT
(again)

she shocked us all.

Such a big, tiny girl.  She decided to go back with the dentist ALL BY HERSELF...no daddy required.  She told me how they checked her teeth and did x-rays and used a spinny thing and how she has

TWO LOOSE TEETH.

when did my baby get so big???

Halloween

Shopping for Halloween costumes with 3 kiddos (17, 16, and 5) has been an experience.  The older two waffle back and forth between wanting to dress up and playing it cool.  Little bird wants to be everything.  As of today, she has settled on a mouse Princess Anna...which is a Princess Anna dress along with mouse ears and whiskers.

This could, of course, change tomorrow. She has also revisited her sandwich costume from 2 years ago.  We won't really know until Halloween night when she will be in hysterics because she doesn't have a batman ostrich outfit.

On Friday, she is performing in her 1st kindergarten production...Nursery Rhymes.  She is the itsy bitsy spider.  This should be fabulous as she is terrified of spiders.  And then Sunday, she is in her 1st dance performance.

A week of firsts.  Firsts we were pretty sure we would never see.  So, you will have to forgive me when I have a video camera whirring and am flashing 1000 photos and buying a shirt proclaiming my momhood. Pride and fear are both fighting for 1st place...will she do it?  will she collapse in fear??  will she whirl on her toes with her arms outstretched while her fingers twirl imaginary string??? will she simply refuse to cooperate and instead tumble onto the floor and match colors and shapes???? will the stress cause seizures????? will the seizures be the regular ones or will they require rescue meds and ER visits??????

I will, of course, have shirts made for the Hardy boys too...because they share their sister's success.  She has no greater cheerleaders than her brothers.  Frank Hardy (only with blonde hair) has his cross-country sections/regions/state qualifier this week too.  Joe Hardy (with dark hair) has some video game he is desperate to get. They will both be there, cheering her on and helping me not fall into tears or panic or both.

Big Daddy will be there too...but his eyes will be as teary as mine.
